By injection, hyaluronic acid is used as an adjunct in cataract surgery, detached retina, corneal transplantation, and eye trauma. It is also used for treating osteoarthritis and as a lip filler in plastic surgery. Topically, hyaluronic acid is used for healing wounds, burns, skin ulcers, stomatitis, and moisturizing the skin. In the ear, hyaluronic acid is used in tympanostomy tubes (ear tubes).
