About us
OmniChem's industrial roots date back to the XVIIth century, when an industrialist of English origin, who was established in Antwerp obtained an authorisation to set up a black powder manufacture on what is still one OmniChem's production sites, in Wetteren. After the second world war, this plant's activities switched progressively to the extraction of tannic acid and other extracts of vegetable origin. The production of synthetic intermediates and bulk actives for the pharmaceutical industry started in 1975. All the industrial activities of Wetteren were combined in 1980 with those of Omnium Chimique, a company based Louvain-la-Neuve and specialized in alkaloids chemistry for the pharmaceutical industry. The new company name "OmniChem" was created. In 1988, the nitration activities and production of agrochemical specialities of a plant situated in Balen, were incorporated in OmniChem's operations. Following the re-organization of the chemical activities of the Soci閠 G閚閞ale de Belgique, to which it belonged, OmniChem was acquired, in 1989, by the Japanese group Ajinomoto Co. Inc. 1993 saw the first investment resulting from a collaboration between OmniChem and its mother company : a sterile production unit for amino-acids used in parenteral nutrition.
