Uses |
The most important uses are used as monomers for synthetic rubber and plastics to produce styrene butadiene rubber, polystyrene, and foamed polystyrene; they are also used to copolymerize with other monomers to produce engineering plastics with different uses. SBS made by copolymerization with butadiene is a kind of thermoplastic rubber, which is widely used as modifier of polyvinyl chloride and polypropylene. It is also used in the production of styrene series resins and styrene butadiene rubber. It is also one of the raw materials for the production of ion exchange resins and pharmaceuticals. In addition, styrene can also be used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, dyes, pesticides, and mineral processing. |
Hazard category |
Class 3.3 high flash point flammable liquid |
Fire-fighting measures |
Hazardous characteristics: Its vapor and air can form an explosive mixture, which may cause combustion and explosion when exposed to open flames, high heat or contact with oxidants. Its vapor is heavier than air, and can spread to a considerable distance at a lower place, and will ignite back when it encounters a fire source.
Fire fighting method: Move the container from the fire scene to an open place as much as possible. Spray water to keep the fire container cool until the end of the fire. Extinguishing agent: foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide, sand. Extinguishing with water is ineffective. |
Emergency treatment |
Skin contact: Take off contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. Eye contact: Immediately lift the eyelids, rinse thoroughly with plenty of running water or saline for at least 15 minutes, and seek medical attention. Inhalation: Leave the scene quickly to a place with fresh air. Keep the airway open. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing stops, give artificial respiration immediately and seek medical attention. Ingestion: Drink enough warm water, induce vomiting, and seek medical attention. |
Packaging, storage, transportation |
Packing method: Small opening steel drum, 170kg/drum, usually with polymerization inhibitor added to the product, stored in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 30℃. The packaging must be sealed and not in contact with air. It should be stored separately from oxidants and acids, and avoid mixed storage. Not suitable for large-scale storage or long-term storage. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. It is forbidden to use mechanical equipment and tools that easily generate sparks. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and suitable storage materials. |
