Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic isolated from the soil microorganism Streptomyces orientalis. Since the 1950s it has been given primarily to treat severe infections caused by gram-positive organisms. Its administration has increased due to the emergence of methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The increase has occurred worldwide, reaching nearly 10-fold in the United State since 1984.
