About us

The journey had just begun?Imbued with the fire of patriotism the visionary scientist - Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray laid the foundation stones of Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical Works Ltd. (BCPW) in the year 1901.

Undaunted spirit, true grit and passion saw the rise of a formidable organisation, which later became Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. as we know it today.

Sir John Cummings observed in a Review of the Industrial Position and Prospects in Bengal in 1908: "The Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical Works Ltd. is one of the most go ahead young enterprises in Bengal. Dr Prafulla Chandra Ray, D.S., E.C.S. started it as a small private concern in Upper Circular Road and made drugs from indigenous materials. It has now a well-thought out and well managed factory with about 70 workmen at 90 Maniktala Main Road?

BCPL soon became the first Indian Company of its kind to manufacture quality chemicals, drugs, pharmaceuticals and home utility products, employing indigenous technology, skills and raw materials. Lending support and contributing to its commendable efforts were erstwhile pillars of the society - Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Shri Subhash Chandra Bose, Dr. Nilratan Sarkar, Dr. B C Ray, Dr. R G Kar and Shri Rajsekhar Basu to name a few. Truly a heritage organisation in the arena of Indian industries, BCPL has left behind exemplary achievements with its pioneering efforts in the process of Indian industrialisation.

With the passage of time, the Company expanded and diversified into a multi product conglomerate. Swiftly emerging a leader in its arena, BCPL paved the way for industrial resurgence, especially in Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals sectors during 1920's 30's. Consequently, West Bengal was able to make a rapid headway in the production of Chemicals and pharmaceuticals in the country.

In the 60's however, compelling market situations acted as deterrent to growth and the Company passed into a dark phase in 1970. In 1980, BCPL was nationalised only to turn into a Public Sector company fully owned by the Government of India.

Many barriers were broken, new frontiers opened and obstacles surmounted. The vision and will to survive provided requisite steam to the Company to forge ahead full throttle and the journey since has been uphill.

Today, BCPL has 4 factories - 2 in West Bengal, 1 in Mumbai and 1 in Kanpur. It has sales outlets in 11 cities, and a wide distribution network all over the country and abroad with more than 1500 distributors. The company has a good infrastructure and huge surplus land.

An organisation of considerable prowess, BCPL now boasts of wide range of offerings including industrial Chemicals, Bulk Drugs, Perfumeries, Toiletries, Hospitals and Surgical Equipment, Sera, Vaccine and Fire Extinguisher among others. With its impeccable lineage, the Company's products have earned the trust of thousands of Indian households and in the present times Bengal Chemicals has acquired a status that confirms as a standard in itself !
