Between the hills of central Mississippi and the flatlands of the Mississippi Delta lies the town of Yazoo City, the home of Mississippi Chemical Corporation. In 1948, 600 farmers from across the South met in the Mississippi Delta and joined forces to incorporate Mississippi Chemical Corporation.
Mississippi Chemical, through its subsidiaries, produces and markets the three primary crop nutrients used by farmers for high-yield agriculture: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Used by farmers the world over, these nutrients provide plants with the food needed to produce enough harvest to feed and clothe today's ever growing population. In addition, Mississippi Chemical produces and distributes some product into the industrial market.
History and Background
In 1948, Southern farmers recognized a need to produce and supply their own nitrogen fertilizer for their fields. It was from this need that Mississippi Chemical was born and, originally, organized as a cooperative. In 1950, Mississippi Chemical became the first cooperative in the world to build its own nitrogen fertilizer plant. This plant, upgraded and modified through the years, continues to stand just a short distance from the corporate headquarters in Yazoo City, Mississippi.
In 1994, the management of Mississippi Chemical recognized that the company needed to change and evolve along with agriculture. In July of that year, Mississippi Chemical became a publicly-held company.
In addition to its headquarters in Yazoo City, Mississippi Chemical subsidiaries have fertilizer plant locations across the U.S. and in the Caribbean. A wholly owned subsidiary, MissChem Nitrogen, L.L.C. produces nitrogen products in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Triad Nitrogen, L.L.C. is a wholly owned subsidiary producing nitrogen in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Mississippi Potash, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary producing potash fertilizer at its two operating mines and refineries in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Mississippi Phosphates Corporation, another wholly owned subsidiary, is a producer of phosphate fertilizer in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Farmland MissChem Limited is a joint venture operation in The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago that produces ammonia, a nitrogen fertilizer.
