SST was founded in New York City in 1948 by three partners, Fred Schmitz, Arthur Schoenwaldt and Harry Turner (hence the name SST) as a brokerage house supplying heavy and industrial chemicals. In 1950, they saw the need to change direction to become a supplier of APIs. SST sought out European-based manufacturers of APIs and developed a long term relationship with our first supplier, Boehringer Mannheimę or whom we distributed Quinine and Quinidine. We rapidly expanded our relationships with suppliers in Europe and quickly added several other major German manufacturers. We represented Knoll Pharmaceuticals (then, the pharmaceutical arm of BASF) for caffeine, and Bayer AG for bulk actives. We also became a major supplier of sulfa from producers in Germany and Poland. We soon expanded our representation to include top API manufacturers located in Italy, Finland and Spain, and eventually established partnerships with companies in Israel, India, and Japan, as well as in the U.S. By the early 1960's, SST was solidly entrenched as an important, dependable, and knowledgeable supply liaison partner between pharmaceutical, API, and fine chemical sources worldwide and the manufacturers of generic and ethical pharmaceutical and bulk vitamin manufacturers in the United States. We are particularly proud of the fact that we still represent many of the international suppliers who joined us in the early years.Unlike many other suppliers, we maintain inventory and ship most of the products we sell directly from our warehouse. As our business expanded, it became necessary, in 1985, to construct a new, larger facility in Clifton, NJ. In addition to housing our office headquarters, the facility contains a huge, attached warehouse to consolidate the storage and control of chemicals required for JIT delivery to customers. |
